African Union approaches to peacebuilding

CoverThe APSA Peacekeeping This Month is pleased to share with you a recent article from African Journal on Conflict Resolution (AJCR), by Jannie Malan, Senior Researcher and Managing Editor of AJCR, titled “African Union approaches to peacebuilding: Efforts at shifting the continent towards decolonial peace”.

The article argues that the African Union (AU) approach to peacebuilding, out of Africa’s historical experience and lessons from the United Nations (UN), is comprehensive and holistic, but requires the existence of a legitimate government, a functional society and domestic parties for dialogue to begin.

Rising Powers & Peacebuilding: Breaking the Mold?

The APSTA Peacekeeping This Month is pleased to share with you a new book edited by Charles T. Call and Cedric de Coning, titled “Rising Powers and Peacebuilding: Breaking the Mold?”.

The book analyzes the peacebuilding concepts, policies and practices of five key rising powers – Brazil, India, Indonesia, South Africa and Turkey.  It finds that these countries’ approaches share some key features but diverge in others. Rising powers have a broader concept of peacebuilding than most Western donor countries, but the extent to which they equate peacebuilding with development varies.

Stabilization: A Cross-cutting Task to Overcome Imminent Violent Conflict

It exploits results of the workshop “Stabilization Instruments Revisited: Increasing the Likelihood of Positive Impact“, which was held by the Center for International Peace Operations on 19 October 2016 under the Chatham House Rule, and report of the High-level Independent Panel on Peace Operations (HIPPO) on uniting our strengths for peace – politics, partnership and people, 16 June 2015.
